DIGGING D E E P E R
Employees of the Seattle zoo had seen their fair share of oddities and weirdos. But nothing could have prepared them for the sight of Constance Jax. The ridiculous amount of black eye shadow was one thing, but her drunken state and outfit choice were another. Combat boots, black thigh highs, and a white men’s dress shirt gave the illusion she just rolled out of a man's bed. And the brown paper bag she drank out of fed the assumption her primary destination that morning was a liquor store.
Male employees gawked at the impressive display of leggage, while females gawked at the obscene display of public intoxication. It was eleven thirty. On a Wednesday. Clearly this girl had no shame. Parents with children offered disapproving glares. A man passing by whistled. What should have made her embarrassed brought a small smile to her face as she took another swig from the poorly concealed alcohol. She was soaking the attention up.
She hadn’t woken up that morning with the intent of going to the zoo. In fact, the zoo was a place she had never been until now. All CJ knew that morning when she woke up, was that if she wanted her music to evolve, she needed fresh inspiration. It had taken her three hours to compile a list of places she’d never been, and choose where to pull her inspiration from. So far, she loved her decision.
While she hadn’t found any inspiration in the crowd of people, she was starting to find some in the animals. The first exhibit she stumbled toward was a cavern like structure, dimly lit and full of reptiles. Personally, she found reptiles fascinating. Especially snakes. She pressed her face against the glass and searched the enclosure for the Indian Rock Python. She wondered what it was like to be on the other side of that glass. Trapped. With millions of wandering eyes staring at you, day after day. CJ frowned at the thought. She brought the concealed bottle to her lips, and downed the Jack Daniels, relishing the warming sensation as it spread throughout her body. Yep. She could already tell today would be, “one of those days.”

THE TRUTH COMES OUT IN THE BREAKDOWNS( • M E M O R I E S M Y G O D T H E S E M E M O R I E S • )Ariana was drunk. She was aware of this. She had been off partying with her best friend. However, said best friend had since gone home, and Ariana wasn’t in the mood to go home with her. So, what does a girl do when she’s off-her-face trashed? She supposed that she could have stayed at the bar and tried to pick someone up. Take someone home, or get them to take her home. It wouldn’t have been hard, and it wasn’t like it would have been her first one night stand either. But no, Ariana hadn’t been in the mood for that. Which was strange, because when she was drunk, that was usually the only thing she was in the mood for.
Ariana had decided that she was in the mood for the Zoo. With that decision made, she had followed her best friend out of the club, and taken a taxi to the Zoo. After all, who didn’t love Zebras? And Lions. Ooh, and Tigers! Ariana’s excitement had overwhelmed her, and she’d been all but bouncing in the backseat of the Taxi. The driver must have thought she was insane. Or maybe just wasted. Which, actually, wouldn’t have too far from the truth. Hell, maybe the tigers and lions and whatever other big cats the Zoo had would help Ariana. Maybe she’d find the inspiration she needed for her next song. It was possible.
Of course, this was all before a certain girl caught her attention. Even in her drunken state, it was hard for Ariana to miss her. She was making more of a commotion than Ariana herself was. Two drunken girls at the Zoo was a strange look for the other visitors of the Seattle Zoo, Ariana was sure. However, she found that in the state she was in, she didn’t particularly care. Stumbling a little, Ariana approached the other girl. “Hey there.”
She said, grinning, “Can I get you a drink?” That was a bit of a joke. But it was also a legitimate offer. After her best friend had ditched her, Ariana needed another drinking buddy. She wasn’t ready for the party to be over yet. DIGGING D E E P E R The sound of another voice startled CJ, and she was abruptly pulled from her thoughts. She turned, briefly looking side to side, then back at the girl who acknowledged her with a ‘who, me?’ expression in her eyes as she pointed toward herself. Obviously she was the one the ‘can I get you a drink?’ was directed at. The few other people in the exhibit were wary of the underdressed girl, keeping their distance. It was like a force field kept everyone else at least eight feet away. At that moment, CJ had two realizations: the meaning of “alone in a crowded room”, and that the stranger had penetrated that eight-foot bubble. Willingly.
With the last thought, CJ instantly relaxed. There was no need to get defensive. Assuming there was nothing wrong with her hearing, it seemed like the girl in front of her was genuinely trying to drink with her, not attack her with sarcasm. Cool. After pausing briefly, CJ cocked her head to the side and smiled slightly. “Show me what you’ve got bartender.” She shifted her weight to the right, or at leas attempted to, the result being an inevitable loss of balance. “Oops. My bad.” She said half apologetically to the man she stumbled into. She regained her balance, courtesy of his arm, and he walked away looking vexed and confused.
The expression on his face, coupled with the ridiculousness of her situation, made Constance burst into light hearted laughter. “I’m CJ.” She said to the girl, extending her arm, and still laughing. CJ finally saw herself the way everyone else at the zoo did- drunk and inappropriate. The fact there was someone else drinking too sort of made her day. “Is today AA Wednesday or something? Because I’m pissed I didn’t get that memo in the mail. I feel like i'm gate crashing.” She raised her paper bag in a cheers kind of motion, unsure if her brain and mouth were working together to translate her thoughts properly. Hopefully this girl had a decent sense of humor.

THE TRUTH COMES OUT IN THE BREAKDOWNS( • M E M O R I E S M Y G O D T H E S E M E M O R I E S • )Ariana loved Seattle. That was for sure. No way could you get away with being wasted at a Zoo in New Jersey. Ariana was thrilled that she had made the move, even if her mother was furious about it. She nodded when the blonde girl pointed to herself, a confused expression on her pretty face. Everyone else at the Zoo were staring (or glaring, in some cases) at the two drunk girls, being very careful to keep their distance. Even in her drunken state, Ariana wondered why. Neither girls were overly tall or had excessive girth. What were they going to do? Get into a hair pulling competition with the frightened passers by?
Ariana couldn’t help the smile that reached her face when she was greeted by the other girl. Laughing, she reached into her purse. She had gotten her hands on a bottle of vodka yesterday for a situation such as this. It was still in its plastic bag, Grinning, Ariana uncapped the bottle, raised it, took a sip and offered it to the girl in front of her. “Will this do?”
She asked the girl. Some people made friends through school and work – Ariana made friends through drunken experiences in mornings at the Seattle Zoo. “Ariana.” Ariana introduced herself as she shook CJ’s hand. A peal of laughter escaped her throat at the blonde’s comment. The reason no one else at the Zoo was pissed was because it was Wednesday morning, but she could easily ignore that logic. “I don’t know – But I’m upset that I didn’t get the memo either!” She laughed again, it was a funny suggestion, after all. AA meetings at the Zoo on a Wednesday morning? “If we’re gate crashing, I’m sure they’ll kick us out.” Ariana said in her most reassuring voice, with a smile and a decisive nod.
